Tripping the Light Faux-tastic: Essential Plus Size Faux Fur Coats

By  |

I have some SERIOUS feelings about faux fur. There is something so ridiculously glamorous about throwing on a fur coat or stole and totally stealing the show.

All of my grandmothers were incredibly stylish, but one of my grandmothers was a model living in Hollywood in the fifties. She was the epitome of every cliche you can think of, which meant that her wardrobe was truly incredible. When I was a kid, I would hide in her closet, trying on the beautiful dresses and wearing her minks around their home pretending I was a model.

When she passed, most of her closet had already been sold off throughout the years except for a few very small pieces. The fur only lives on in my memories now, but I’ve never quite shaken the decadent dreams of living in the fashion of old Hollywood.

My grandmother!

Alas, it gets cold in Houston like one week out of the year, so I don’t have a lot of opportunities to wear all the faux fur hiding in my closet. But you can bet I’m sitting in my apartment with the AC cranked down way too low with all of my leopard print thrown across my shoulders.

Whether you’re holed up from piles of snow or hiding from the 80 degree holiday season, here are a few of my faux fur jacket favorites for this fall and some styling tips on how to rock them!

Joanna Hope Short Faux Fur Jacket from Simply Be

This coat is like the modern interpretation of my Cruella DeVille dreams. I am also partial to a short coat because a) they often hit at a flattering angle that implies an hourglass shape, and b) they give more room for my hips and stomach! I would most likely pair this with a bright red sheath dress for some drama, but all black underneath with some faux leather leggings would just SLAY.

Leopard Fur Coat from Eloquii

The leopard coat is a quintessential in everyone’s closet. It manages to be iconic, classic, and dramatic all in one. I like to pair mine with unexpected pops of color, such as a turquoise dress or even throw it on with a short black dress and some brightly colored tights. Play into the fun of this print!

Wine Burgundy Midi Faux Fur Coat from Torrid

A coat with a built in fur collar makes me feel like some Game of Thrones royalty. I also have this weird need to bury my face in it every five minutes. That can’t be just me, right?? Burgundy is one of my favorite colors of fall, and this coat is just perfectly meant for skinny jeans. It has enough drama on its own, so keeping it simple can balance this into everyday wear.

Boucle Teddy Coat

I have some SERIOUS feels about this coat. I want to hug it forever and always like a giant teddy bear. This coat manages to be dramatic while also staying neutral with the tan color. I love black and tan, so I’d probably rock skinny black jeans and a black top under, but hiding a pop of hot pink underneath would add even more sweetness to this!

Graphic Faux Fur Capelet by Eshakti

Capelets are SEVERELY underrated. They will keep you a lot warmer than you would expect, but they are awesome alternatives for those of us who live in less than frigid areas. The graphic print here obviously would look awesome on a black dress for something formal, but over a bright green turtleneck and jeans it would be a great look for something more casual!

These are just a few of my fall faux fur favorites… How would you style these pieces?
